SKATERS INFORMATION

NEW TO CANSKATE

CanSkate is a national program designed by Skate Canada and used as a learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages. On the first session the skater will be assessed and placed in a group according to their ability. Our CanSkate program teaches the “proper way” to skate through a series of levels that the skater learns at their own pace. Skaters are taught by an NCCP certified coach(s) and Program Assistant(s), when available. When you sign up for CanSkate you will be in a program that has 6 different levels, with an optional 7th level. This program focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Particpants will learn forward and backward skating, stopping, turning and many other skills to build a solid foundation for all types of skating (i.e., figure skating, hockey or recreational). Within this program skaters will receive badges when they complete each level. CSA Hockey Helmets are mandatory until the skater has successfully completed Level 5. This program runs for 45 minutes.

NEW TO JR. Academy

Jr. Academy is the next step in our group programs offered. Skaters need to have completed the CanSkate Level 4 program or be advanced into the Jr. Academy program by a professional coach. Skaters will continue to earn CanSkate as well as STARSkate badges. This program will introduce skaters to free skating, stroking, dance and skills. This session is taught by an NCCP certified coach(s) as well as Program Assistant(s), when available. This program runs for 60 minutes on average.

NEW TO PRIVATE LESSONS

Once a skater has completed our Jr. Academy program, they may start taking lessons with a Club Coach. The Cheam Skating Club offers our skaters: Freeskate, Stroking, Spin Patch, Skills, and Dance Sessions. Coaches offer private and group lessons, teaching all the disciplines. It is up to the parent to contact a Club Coach of their choice and make arrangements for these lessons.

Once the skater has a Coach, parents and skaters meet with the Coach and discuss the days and times the skater wishes to skate, and the number and type of lessons the Coach is able to provide.

Parents are responsible for paying for ice fees, registration fees, and coaching fees. Coaching fees are included in the registration fees.

We accept students who would like to skate with our Club that have done municipal or school skating, skaters transferring from another club, and new skaters that would like to join our club. If you have any questions please email the Cheam Skating Club at cheamsc@telus.net
