CanSkate - Learn to Skate

Canskate is  the Skate Canada designed “Learn to Skate Program” for all. This innovative and progressive ice skating program can take you from your first steps on the ice through to involvement in the ice sport of your choice. Canskate provides the fundamental skills required for all types of ice sports: figure skating, hockey, ringette, speed skating and learning to skate for fun! Group lessons include 45 minutes of professional coaching, from one of our Skate Canada certified coaches.

Badges, ribbons and report cards will be awarded upon achievement of various levels within the program.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment is required? 

Skaters are required to have their own skates, gloves and a CSA Approved Hockey Helmet.

Where can I buy skates and helmets? 

Canadian Tire, Sport Chek and Cheam Source for Sports are great local stores to purchase and sharpen skates and helmets. 

CSA approved hockey helmets are required, face cages are not mandatory. 

​

What skates should I buy for my Canskater? 

Canskate is an all blades program for all sports, skaters can wear whichever skates will best support them. We recommend either figure skates or hockey skates that provide proper ankle support.

How old does my skater have to be to join? 

Skaters must be 3 years old by the start date. 

​

Does the program have any pre-requisites? 

There are no pre-requisites for the Canskate program. Canskate can be the first time your skater ever steps on the ice! 

​

Are parents/guardians allowed on the ice? 

No, our sessions are taught by Skate Canada certified coaches and assisted by trained Program Assistants. They will be able to assist your skater with their needs. 

 

Do parents/guardians need to stay for lessons? 

Parents/Guardians are responsible for their children while at the arena. Do not leave your children unattended.

Are rentals available? 

No, skaters must have their own equipment. 

​

What kind of skates do you recommend? 

Hockey skates or figure skates are recommended as well as ensuring they have a stiff supportive ankle.
